  • Benjamin Moore McGehee (Fictitious) - Former confederate cavalry soldier turned engineer, then doctor, then archaeologist.

  • Louisa Sophia (Real) - illegitimate child of the Earl Cromer who is the Egyptian Consul-General or British citizen in charge of occupied Egypt after the invasion of 1882. Her age and almost all details of her life in this book are fictitious. 

  • Abu Saqr (Son of Falcon) (Fictitious) - Orphan from Aleppo which at the time was part of the Ottoman Empire. Abu was unofficially adopted by Dr. McGehee at the age of thirteen.

  • Professor Ali Mousa (Fictitious) - Born in the Valley of the Crescent, he is the associate curator at the Bulaq museum, a professor of languages, history, and mathematics at the university in Cairo. 

  • Duffadar Jeevan Nahal (Fictitious) - Duffadar = Corporal of the Horse or Sergeant if referring to infantry, from the 13th Bengal Lancers. He and his twenty men are tasked with protecting Louisa. His horse is named Chetak which is the name of a famous Indian war horse.

  • 13th Bengal Lancers (Real, the soldiers in the book are Fictitious) - Each of the names for Jeevan’s soldiers were chosen because they were Victoria Cross recipients. The 13th Bengal Lancers in this book are part of a Dogra Hindu regiment from Punjab/Lahore. Indian regiments of the British army during that time were segregated by religion. They speak Dogri (a dialect of Punjabi).  The 13th Bengal Lancers were part of the 1882 invasion and would have been in Egypt in 1883. The names use received their awards much later as Indians were not officially recognized as recipients until WWI. The individual soldiers in the book are a work of fiction including their rank, age, physical description, skills etc.

    2. Guru of the forbidden martial art (Kalaripayattu or Kalari) which teaches weapons and then hand to hand techniques that utilize a lot of pressure points. Ram has been teaching his squadron the techniques of Kalari when no British are around.

  3. Acting Lance Duffadar = Lance Corporal - Premindra Bhagat

  • Charles Chipiez (Real) - French architect, illustrator, Egyptologist, Iranologist. Charles Chipiez - Wikipedia. All other details and conversations in this book are fictitious.

  • Major Charles Davis (Real) - officer in the Pennsylvania 7th cavalry who received the Medal of Honor in 1863. None of his interactions with Ben are real, although his unit did serve in the Atlanta campaign and might have been in close proximity to the Texas 6th. 

  • Charles Edwin Wilbour (Real) - American journalist and archaeologist who was an expert in languages and parties. He did really own a river boat but a few years after the fictional events of the book. Charles Edwin Wilbour - Wikipedia All other details in this book are fictitious.

  • Émile Burgsch (Real) - German archaeologist and assistant curator of the Bulaq Museum in Cairo Egypt.Émile Brugsch - Wikipedia All other details and conversations in this book are fictitious.

  • Hermine Hartleben (Real) - German archaeologist. Hermine Hartleben - Wikipedia All other details, including her engagement and conversations in this book are fictitious.

  • Nashwa (Fictitious) - Abu’s first girlfriend and hostess at a Cairo restaurant which her family owns.

  • Evelyn Baring 1st Earl of Cromer (Real) - Louisa’s father and Consul-General of the Egyptian occupation. All details in the book about the Earl are totally fiction other than his station and being Louisa’s father. Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer - Wikipedia

  • Mahdi Saqr and Yara  Saqr (Fictitious) - Abu’s deceased parents.

  • Ahmed Gerigar (Fictitious) - foreman at the Perdiccas tomb search site his son (Real) by the same name is also on the site and later would become Howard Carter’s primary rais (foreman) during the excavation of the tomb of King Tut. All details in the book are completely fictitious. The name of Ahmed Gerigar’s father and all other details are fictitious.   • Caesar Octavius Remus II is the current emperor of Remus, a nation formed in 236 A.D. or 4281 An after defeating the Ripvor the previous year. The founders of Remus were a mix of Roman Legionaries and Sasanid soldiers who were attacking a Roman fort at the time of their summons. They joined forces to defeat the Ripvor and overtime combined their cultures and religions. Their religion now is a form of Zoroastrianism which has combined Jupiter and Ahura Mazda intothe monotheistic deity called Ahura Jupiter.

  • Aquila Magnus is the First Counselor to the Emperor and the head of the Remus spy organizations.

  • Faustulus is the slave who runs the emperor’s household.

  • Bennu is the female Babiakhom interpreter for Remus II. 

  • Iskur is an elven assassin who travels with a band of two other elves, one Hysaka and one Babiakhom. 

  • Hem-netjer Panehesy is the Nubian priest who is accompanying Professor Ali. He was sent to use the Seba to bring back a large military force to Aaru. 

  • Polemarchos Alexanderia ben Zev i Hurasu is the commanding officer in charge of the Alexandrian 4th Stratia.

  • Qeb is a Babiakhom member of the Alexandrian army who serves as an advisor and wind singer to Polemarchos Alexandria ben Zev i Hurasu.  

  • Kehpri is a female Hysakas orphan raised in an Alexandrian orphanage.   

  • Dimaerites Esther ben Zev i Hurasu i Enoch is the seventeen-year-old daughter of Alexandria ben Zev i Hurasu commander of the Alexandrian 4th Stratia and Judah ben Enoch the commander of the 2nd Stratia.

  • Ssherrsslatigausss Quegmmexalarrr (Ssherrss) is a stirithy metal singer who is part of the Alexandrian army and the Khepri's Alpha. 

  • Shanesha is the leader of a company of welven soldiers from the city of Nippur. He has platinum blond hair and violet eyes.

  • Inanna means Lady of Sky. She is the governess of the city of Nippur in the welven kingdom of Kutha. She is the mother of fraternal twins, Ki and Lil which are of mixed elven and welven blood and thus considered repugnant outcasts of both races.

  • Djoser is a babiakhom wind singer who works for Iskur. He has used his beast master skills to have a martial eagle (a native of egypt) and two caracals which are his shadows. He is in it for the money but has no compunction about killing or torturing to complete his goals.

  • Shemush is the hysakas life singing healer/torturer which works with Iskur.

  • Enkara - A lieutenant in the New Moon political faction of Nippur. He is tall and thin with long raven hair and red eyes. The major families of Nippur and their vassal families have united into three primary political factions:

    • The New Moon faction is made up of younger welven families that are less than a thousand An old. The younger families have never experienced the Lamentations and do not believe they will return. 

    • The Midnight faction, of which Inanna, the governess of Nippur, is the leader, is the top political power in the city. Innana and her faction have ruled for a thousand An. 

    • The Lion’s Pride faction ruled the thousand An before Inanna and her Midnight faction came to power. This group is always maneuvering to regain what they feel is their rightful place.

  • Governess Inanna - is the ruler of Nippur. She leads the Midnight faction and has been in charge for 1000 An. She is also the mother of Ki and Lil. Their father is Iskur the elf.

  • Ki (earth/soil) - One of the half-elf/half-welf twins. She has the normal ears of a welf/human and a regular elf/human complexion but also has long blazing, red hair streaked with orange and yellows, along with the startling golden eyes of a welf. She has regular hearing, and her eyesight is regular human eyesight.  

  • Lil (wind) - Is one of the half-elf/half-welf twins. She has pointed ears and advanced hearing of an elf but is pale like a welf with the striking, silver hair of a welf, but the normal brown eyes of an elf or human. Despite how normal her eyes look, she has welven night vision.

  • Thoresten Odachi - is the dwarf traveling companion of Ki and Lil. He is 5’1” and weighs 250 pounds which is pure muscle. He has spent the last fifty years with the twins and is descended from a group of Norwegian Norsemen from the Kingdom of Sygnafylki on Earth.

  • Hōjō Masako ben Leonidas i Draco is the granddaughter of the Shogun of Yuhi and the granddaughter of the King of Alexandria. She was enslaved by dwarven pirates when she was three and sold welves.

  • Ssekhrri (Sekrey or Sekhri- Captain of the Troop in Ancient Egyptian) Rrummblinss is the liaison assigned to Ben and Louisa’s group from the nation of Grrommerrk. A great fighter, Rrummblinss is also an incorrigible womanizer.

  • Ningal is the daughter of the Kuthan Ambassador to Grrommerrk. The young welf girl is fifteen years old.

  • Zanna is the daughter of the Uran Sub Ambassador to Grrommerrk. The young elf girl turns fourteen in the book.

  • Gorte is the teenage son of the Ambassador of Kerma to Grrommerrk.

  • Jason is the teenage son of the Ambassador of Alexandria to Grrommerrk.

  • Livia and Lucille are the teenage daughters of Titus Selendius, the ambassador of Remus to Grrommerrk.

  • Madri is the teenage daughter of the Ambassador of Kuru to Grrommerrk.

  • Hemmetrre is the female stirithy second wife to Ssherrss. She has normal brown fur, but she was born missing her left hand/paw, which marked her with bad luck. She has heterochromia, with one blue and one brown eye.

  • Queen Nabra is the current Pharaoh of Kerma. Her husband died the year before. Her thirty-year-old son wishes to take over, but they have agreed to delay the handover until the Remulans are defeated.

  • Prince Tambal is the only son of Queen Nabra and the late Pharoah. 

  • Princess Tiye is the first wife of Prince Tambal and the future Queen of Kerma.

  • General Kinya is the older brother to Prince Tambal, from a second wife to the late Pharoah. 

  • Prínkipas Archimedes ben Solan i Draco is the brother-in-law of Basilius Philip - (King of Alexandria) and Masako’s paternal granduncle-in-law. 

  • Hem-netjer Rashida is a priest in the Keeper of the Seba organization. 

  • General Kaa is the general who takes the place of General Kinya after his attempted coup.
